The default settings of the rules that people have to agree to when they sign up are written in rather bad grammatical English and that bugs me!! It also has a reference to French law which seems a little irrelevant as by Forum is about and based in Spain!

I see I can add to these rules, but I see no way of changing the default ones - is this possible?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to modify the default registration rules. Your best bet is really to just add to the current rules. Sorry!

It seems a shame that the first page seen when signing up should contain such bad English - it gives a really bad first impression to any forum in my opinion. Is there no chance that someone on forumotion can correct this on the default settings.
