Your forum is about gaming, correct? Research on what games people are searching for on Google, write original, well-written articles about those games ( better if you don't have competition since you're now starting to learn SEO ) and post them at your forum. Don't use any strange keywords, because people can't find what's weird and what you just made up.

Over a period of time, crawlers will find that content and index it. Use a little money from your pocket to get rid of those spammy links in the footer of your forum ( I believe forumotion added a feature to pay credits to remove them ) . Web hosting does not have anything to do with gaming.

As I can't post links to seo tutorials that I created on this forum, search on Google and you might find a few of them ( the ones that I created ) . They should help you optimize your front page for Google and other search engines,
