User already exists - but no no no they don't

Been searching around here for a while now and this seems fairly unique. When users of my forum (which is recently created) try to register they get a "that use already exists", even though there absolutely isn't. Neither in the normal lists nor the inactive, nor the deactivated. This problem only applies to some as well, some seems to work instantly.

Of course, it's the ones who are the loudest about it who it isnt working for -_-

I find I see stuff like this happening a lot. Unless someone can fix this issue, just tell your members to sign up with whatever username they wish, then you can just change it in the Adminpanel to what ever they want.

Yeah it happens a lot. I just tell my members to add a last name and I'll change it in the admin panel

Please note, that it will then allow spam bots to register as well.

I've applied the fix suggested by Sanket. My forum requires being in different user groups for posting in (or even viewing) different forums, so eventual spembots are less of an issue than people complaining about not being able to be named what they want.

I've yet too see if it works, but it seems reasonable enough.
