Edit Post Notification
I noticed today that when someone edits his/her own post in a topic, a message now appears at the bottom to let others know a change has been made. This used to only occur when the post being edited was less recent than the last post in the thread. However, edit notification now occurs when the post being edited is the most recent post in the thread.
Is there a good reason why the edit notification must be enforced for the most recent post in a thread? Is there a way for the admin to disable this function? In my opinion, this policy will frustrate posters who want the freedom to fix minor errors in their recent posts without creating a record of it. As long as no one posted after them, why does there need to be a record?
Thx,
Aaron

Re: Edit Post Notification
so what your saying in the first post only it says the person edited it but in the other posts in the same thread they edit it does not say anything am i understanding this correctly?
Re: Edit Post Notification
It will make a note of edits to all posts in a thread. Before, it used to not report edits to the most recent (last) post. Say there's only a single post in the thread. If you edit that post, there will be a note of it, even if there are no other posts made afterward.
EDIT: Testing...
EDIT: You can see what I mean. There's a report on this thread that says I edited twice.

Re: Edit Post Notification
It's not normal. The last (most recent) post in a thread used to never reported an edit message before today.
TESTING: This thread shows reports an edit, but no one posted after me.

Re: Edit Post Notification
I dont know why. The Forum or topic just reports editing.
If a administrator or moderator edits it and its says that the user that made the post did it, it means it was reported by the post owner.

Re: Edit Post Notification
Isn't it just silly that I can see that you edited your post twice? It's never been that way.
(Oops, I misspelled "edited", and you can plainly see that I corrected it!)

Re: Edit Post Notification
Yep. The Post reports any editing to let the owner of post or other people know that it was edited. They name these, "Edit Reports"
Last edited by (Whoever) (Date) at (Time) - (How many times did the owner edit)
Last edited by Srenfro2002, 1/19/08 at 4:28PM - Edit 1 time in total.
See what I mean...
Whoever edits it makes the post make a report.
It shows the user that edited it, the date is was edited, the time it was edited and and how many times it was edited.

Re: Edit Post Notification
I just discovered that when an administrator edits a user's post, it creates an edit report that says the administrator made the edit. This is a terrible addition to the board. I wish I could downgrade to the previous version...
BOO HISS!!!! PREPARE TO WATCH YOUR FORUMS BECOME FILLED WITH EDIT REPORTS! THIS IS SOOOO LAME!
EDIT: fixed a small typo

Re: Edit Post Notification
Wow. I have noticed this as well today, I dont actually think this is a bad thing. There may be some updates taking effect right now. I'm sure we will hear from Forumotion staff about these new functions and how to use these new features soon.

Re: Edit Post Notification
there are indeed updates taking effect so please be patient till they are announced properly and we know for sure wether these features are optional or not. (you will note in admin>>>General>>>configuration you can now set your memberlist to whom you want to vew it, that is one i have noticed today too)
Re: Edit Post Notification
Yes, I guess it's not all bad. I do understand about the updates, but this is the first time I've noticed it enough that it made me want to find out what's up and let someone know about it.
I don't mind the changes as long as there's a good reason for doing so. Can't think of any right now, but we'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Re: Edit Post Notification
i am sure there will be an announcement soon, there are always afew glitches when updates are added, but they are normally fixed fairly quickly.
Re: Edit Post Notification
I think some good reasons could be if there becomes a heated discussion between members, and when you go to check it out, you will see the edits and know that there might be more to what went on, then what you are currently viewing. Especially for those who might try to play innocent when they instigated a situation.
When I see an edit, I don't automatically think or know someone spelled a certain word wrong. I just think, maybe they wanted to add something, or re-word something to make it easier to understand. There can be many reasons to why someone would edit. It doesn't always point the finger that a person has made a mistake.
And like Zinex stated, there are new updates going on. And sometimes the option to change a new update in the admin panel is sometimes the last thing that is added. So we just need to be patient to see if the update is complete.

Re: Edit Post Notification
at the moment i notice the memberlist feature and i also see in user settings a favorites functionality that cannot be set to yes yet...so i imagine they are indeed still ongoing.
Re: Edit Post Notification
I have to say I am very happy about the memberlist feature. Thanks for pointing that one out Zinex!
Edited to add. I just wonder what they mean by Front Office. Index? I guess they might explain that during the official update announcement.

Re: Edit Post Notification
zinex, thanks for the tip about the memberlist. I can see that as a useful feature. Hope there are other improvements like it.
skittlespc, my board doesn't get a lot of heated discussion, but when it does, it's rather obvious who's in the wrong. I don't see how putting edit records on the most recent posts keeps anyone honest anyway. It's the prior posts you want to keep an eye on, so people can't go back and change their words. Having the edit records on prior posts was good enough to keep people straight.
I don't really care about when someone makes a mistake or adds to their post. But I think lots of users go back and change things they write, usually immediately afterwards, and no one needs or wants to know about it. What I think will happen is you'll see a lot more edit records that are unnecessary and could distract from the flow of conversation.
I sure hope it's temporary. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed. Otherwise, I'll be using the preview button a lot more than I used to!
Thx,
Aaron

Re: Edit Post Notification
i hadnt even noticed this particular feature, and to some degree i agree that it may be unecessary for every single edit, we will have to wait and see what those smart techs are up to
Re: Edit Post Notification
Thanks zinex. I just wanted to make someone aware of this. Now that you see my issue, I'll let you and the rest of the team handle it however you see fit.
Thanks again!

Re: Edit Post Notification
Is the Solved Display Button located in the User Settings new? Or have I just missed seeing that one before?
I haven't seen that favorites function in the User Settings that you were talking about Zinex. I will keep looking. I am looking at phpbb3. Maybe I need to look at my phpbb2 board.
Edited to say, nevermind, I found it! hehehe But I can click yes on mine. I just don't know what it is yet. lol Looking forward to hearing the news.

Re: Edit Post Notification
i have phpbb3 too. But when i click yes on it, it doesnt actually stay at yes, once submitted it goes back to no.
Re: Edit Post Notification
It appears that edit reports have disappeared entirely. Any member can edit their earlier posts with no record! Interesting...
