Is it possible to have an option to display the last ten posts, regardless of whether they have been read?

yes ... use the "view last posts button" situated near the top of each forum

It appears I don't have this option. All I have is:

View posts since last visit • View your posts • View unanswered posts

What I'm really after is a straightforward 'View last 10 posts' option that is not affected by when I last visited or whether they have been read or replied to. It doesn't have to be 10 posts. That was just as an example.
