Unauthorized Advertising on Homepage & Portal

Hello,

I have two forums, neither of which have any real traffic on them. I've only had them for a couple of months at the most and have been trying my best to construct them.

Yesterday I didn't notice a problem, but today when I loaded up the websites, I found some advertising underneath the forum header. Very large and clearly not something I had put on there myself. I went into the administration panel and could not find the code responsible for the advertisement.

This is in the same place on both the homepage and portal of both forums. The advertisement seems to be constructed from the same organization. The items that are being advertised are distracting and completely incompatible with what my forums are about.

My question is how did this happen? What can I do to remove this and keep it from happening again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Today there were a series of annoying popups as well. I was even contemplating deletion of the forums and just starting over. I was really becoming disheartened.

However, that did the trick. If it happens again, I know what I need to check on first.
