What happens when points expire?

Hopefully a simple question ...

I have bought points to allow me to modify the forum templates and I may also buy further space for the Gallery module too. Can anyone confirm however, what happens when the years access (for example), expires? Will I get an automated reminder email to renew/buy further points, or am I expected to remember to renew myself. Will my modified templates simply default back and my gallery space shrink back to 10mb?
Please advise.
