I received the following via email concerning possible viruses attached to one of my forums.

Hey Susan, It happened again today when I logged on to the forum. It said 24 threats had been caught. When I signed on this morning I did not go anywhere before your forum so I am inclined to think there is something attached to your forum. Is there someway to run a virus scan on the forum itself?

I am not getting any virus alerts and ran a virus and anti-spyware just to make sure.

So, is there a way to run a virus scan on the forum itself?

The forum is:

http://lordismyshepherd.forumsmotion.com/

Thank you in advance. Susan

[Only Topic] ActiveX/Popups/Virus'/Trojans-SOLVED Empty Re: [Only Topic] ActiveX/Popups/Virus'/Trojans-SOLVED

Post by Susan April 19th 2008, 1:43 am

There are now 2 people saying that there is a virus attached to my forum.

Hey Susan, I'm sorry, I must have been confusing. I don't have nor did I get any virus's on my computer. I have my virus scan running anytime my computer is on. What it does is catch the virus before it invades and destroys it (firewall). Then it sends me a pop up report to say it just caught a virus threat. I never have the virus get through. I have not been on your site today and have not received this report. I did go on yesterday and the day before and within a minute I had the report. I warned Pamela as I did you about this encase it was the forumotion software. She said she was changing her forum look and received a couple of virus's from the skin (whatever that means). I told her I had not been on your forum today but she said she visited it this morning and received two virus's and her virus software was cleaning them up. I am not worried about my computer because as I said I have very good software that updates daily but I wanted to alert you encase there might be a picture or attachment on your forum that could be carrying this virus. The banner that was made for you could even carry a virus. I really don't know what it could be but I just wanted to let you know so you can protect your forum and your computer. Hope this helps explain. Thanks,
I ran a virus scan on my computer but no viruses are showing up. Is there a chance that there are viruses attached to my forum? Please, I would aprreciate an answer. The only thing new, that is on my forum are the ads, that forumotion allows. Thank you.

[Only Topic] ActiveX/Popups/Virus'/Trojans-SOLVED Empty Pop ups

Post by celticwraith April 22nd 2008, 12:26 am

I'm getting pop ups when I go to my forum. My members say that they aren't which is good, but I can't figure out why I am. My pop up blocker is set to high and I still got a couple, I would think it was just something with my computer, but it's only happening when I go to my forum. I also have it set to show add to everyone but when I log on they aren't there and they use to be all the time. I have now idea if you can help. Oh ya one more thing on the google map it shows 2 people on it me and someone else, but I'm the only one on line and there are no hidden members on line. I have no idea if any of these thing are connected, but figured I may as well check.
Thanks

No, it's not just you. I have been checking out other people's forums the past few days and I will get pop ups.

Some are just a blank screen, some take me to ebay. I thought this was odd and it has never happened before...

The pop ups I am getting are full screen pop ups. Is this what your are getting as well.

I just got news that one of my members has had the computer at there friends house get attacked by viruses when going on to my forum.
I destroyed her computer today while trying to go on this forum. It started with a worm followed by 33 viruses.
this is a quote from a PM he sent me. This all started at the same time the forum had been up for 90 days. This forum has been doing good and growing at an OK rate.
This really upsets me and if I missed the part that said that after 90 day this would happen let me know. I'm sorry if I'm sounding bad here, but this really sucks and if it means that for it to stop I have to pay for it please let me know. If this is something I missed when I started the forum I think that a reminder would be a great idea, so that even if I had read this would happen and forgot you would remind me. Please let me know what is going on? This could destroy this forum if member stop coming and no one joins.

Thanks and please let me know whats going on.

Yeah, that is the same thing that is going on as well. I had 2 viruses but my software stop them.

My friend went to another one of our friends forum and was warned of 23 virues and her software caught them before they invaded her computer.

Though the Admin of that one particular forum doesn't get any warnings, that is what doesn't make sense. I am not a member of her forum but my other friend is. We both get warnings and the Admin doesn't...

Has your forums been hit with any spambots or hacks?

I have gone to many forumotion forums and my software is not picking up on anything. I am pretty heavily protected.

When I was working support in malware removal, when we had a forum that had gotten hit with viruses before, it was due to a hacker.

What about any links you have on your site, that could be going to an infected or crapware site?

This might be a long shot, but check my thread here, especially my second post.

There have been some issues lately re. adverts and some users have experienced pop-ups (although I haven't) and general feedback suggests this fix has helped with the pop-ups too.

Pamela, I didn't get the link...did you send it in pm, here or via email?

Very good The Staff and Moderating team here is usually right on top of things, and most helpful. Very good

I did ask a question about viruses a few days ago, and never got a response, which is unusual.

My question remains:

https://help.forumotion.com/other-problems-f46/virus-alert-on-the-forum-t12933.htm

I haven't gotten any pop ups or any viruses, on my puter...even going to other forumotion websites. One thing that I have gotten and is very annoying is the Microsoft Dynamic editing thingy (activeX); that is trying to be activated on my website and other forumotion websites as well. It is caught by my computer security and I do have the option of opening it or not. I choose not to open it. It only showed up after the ads were re-activated! What the fuck ?!? confused affraid Could the ads, be the cause of these problems?

Oh, and that is a new question. What a Face

I think it's a valid question. I have done a couple things like remove the most resent links and tried the other things that where suggested and I will see how it goes.

Split and Merged Topics, changed to Only Topic

I decided to merge the posts together. Susan I think how your posts were missed is because you tagged it onto the end of an old thread. Sometimes those get overlooked unfortunately, thinking they had already been solved or someone else is working with someone on the issue already. Sorry about that.

Before moving this to Techs, I am going to talk to Typlo about this, and see if there might be any connection to the addition to the ads again. And see if this is a Techs issue.

Sorry for the inconvenience, after investigation those type of ads have now been disabled.

The only ads that might now appear on your forum are the google ads, that shouldn't cause any harm to your forum, to your browser, nor to your computer.

Thanks a lot Typlo, I and I am sure I speak for the others as well, appreciate it! loove

To those who have been effected by this, please let us know if this has helped but you won't know for sure unless you know your computer is currently clean. I would suggest that you please run your protection scans, and I would also recommend on online scan as a backup to your current software. Such as these... f-secure
Panda ActiveScan look for Free Online Scan.

As I used to work in computer security support forums, I have a list of recommended free software to protect your computer. If you need this, please pm me about it. And if you find from running your scans, and online scan linked above, that you are indeed infected, please pm me, and I will instruct you further in how to get things cleaned up.

I hope the steps that Typlo and the Tech team has remedied this issue. Wink

Thanks!

:wééé: Thank you Typlo and Skittlespc for clearing this up for us! :wééé:

cheers Ya'll Rock! cheers

The program I use for spyware and viruses is AVG Free Version:

http://free.grisoft.com/

It has an anti-virus, anti-rootkit and anti-spyware, and I haven't had any problems on my puter since my puter-geek, installed it. I also use the security package that came with my puter and it's firewall.

Post by Cornelia April 24th 2008, 6:06 am

By the way, which browser were the affected members using ?

I ask this question, because during my career as a staff member, I saw more security issues for Internet Explorer users than for Mozilla Firefox users, and I personally had many security issues under IE (two startpage hijacks by trojans, various viruses, spywares, etc.) while I had no more new virus since I adopted Firefox. IE is known to be a real Swiss cheese with all its security gaps. If you land by accident on a page where there's a malicious script (like the "you are an idiot" page, or some aggressive ads like those fake antivirus ones), you're done, while FF users won't be attacked.

I agree with you there Cornelia. IE is swiss cheese! Rotten Swiss Cheese if you ask me. lol

It appears that most are using IE. Especially the ones who are getting the ActiveX popping up. Because FF does not support ActiveX, so if they were using FF it would not even come up.

I personally never see the ads and never have. I am not sure if it's my Firefox that is blocking them or my other protection that is. Which ever it is, I am not dropping it. lol

I know it is not my AVG or SpywareBlaster, but it could likely be my WinPatrol (spyware) and/or my Comodo firewall. I also doubt it is my other spyware protection SuperAnti-Spyware. Whatever it is, I like it. hehehe
