is there a way to set the minimum amount of posts before someone can open a topic?

For example some sites won't allow you to post a topic until you post atleast 10 replies to other topic?

Thanks

You could create a group and rank called "New User", which then you set to "0" posts
what that means is that they dont need to post anything to fall into that category.
You then restrict the group and rank in the permissions so they CANT create stickies or announcements etc in any forum

You then create another group and rank called "Users" then set that to "10" posts
This means they must posts at least 10 posts to fit into this category.
You then UNrestrict the group and rank in the permissions so they CAN create stickies or announcements etc in all the forums

this would be the easiest way, other suggestions welcome Smile

I can't get it to work :S

I can't work out how to make a new rank and group so they link together :S

Here is an easier way to do this

1. Create a group firstly, call it "New User"

2. Create a Rank called "New user" and set the minimum posts to "0", Set "Set as Special Rank :" to "No"

This means that new members will automatically be called "New User"

3. Create a new group called "User"

4. Create a Rank called "User" and set the minimum posts to "10", Set "Set as Special Rank :" to "No"

This means members who have posted 10 times will turn into "Users" and you can moderate them.

5. Go into "General" and "Categories & forums"

6. Select minimum posts Editer on the right hand side of the forum for each forum you have.

3. Select the "Permissions" tab

4. Select "Advanced" at the bottom of the page

5. Uncheck the box's for "New User" under the following heading

  • Open a topic
  • Create a poll
  • Create a sticky message
  • Create an announce

6. Select "Save" in the bottom right hand corner of the page

Any member of the forum will NOT be able to Create a topic, Create a poll, Create a sticky message or Create an announce if they have not posted more than 10 posts

Untick "Members",
All the box's will clear and you will have to check all the box's again except from "New Member"

All rights will automatically change when the "New Member" hits ten posts and changes to "Member".

They will then automatically be allowed to create topics, polls etc

Smile

The user will sit at default until they post,
Once they post that will trigger the change to occur and the will stay as New member, hence why i was advising to call them "New User" as this is the default name for a new registered member

Once the first post has been done they will have no access to create a topic, this includes the first post. the first post cannot be to create a new topic when you have changed the permissions on the forum
This is currently similar to a system i use on my site and it works, my staff were worried as you are, at the beginning but once they saw how it worked they were fine Smile

hmmm ok right so i've got two new groups "new members" and "members" and two new ranks "new members and "members".

I've set the members rank to 6 posts so the new users will change into members as soon as they hit 6 posts.

Once they hit six posts they will automatically be changed to the new group which is members? which allows them to post topics etc.?

Is that right???

And this will work?

um.... it didn't work???

I did everything you said but the group won't automatically change to allow them to post topics etc.

I tested it out and when i'd made 6 posts it still wouldn't allow me to access the forum that i stopped new users entering

I've looked around and lots of people have said that groups and users do not join together?

Help please

Hmmmmm strange,

Maybe its to do with the versions, I use Punbb and the system works on mine,

I have "New User" set so they can only see and use certain forums, when they get to 100 posts, it automatically changes them to "Advanced, Once they hit 1000 then they go to"Support" then i will consider promotions

I added a dummy user and tried it out, took 6 hours cause i got bored lol

Let me know the version and i'll look into it

Regards

First thing, Dont ever give access to the admin panel to anyone that isn't already a manager or admin on your site!!!

This has happened before and people get kicked from their own forum

I will certainly have a look into the forum and will post the results, I can work with the forum with out needing to access the admin panel to advise you further Smile

This can not be done automatically, you have to manually add people to your groups. Just give those groups then additional permissions, as described in the previous posts already. Wink
