can this be added to the top of the forum above the posts rather than the bottom, saves scrolling right to the bottom to see who is online?

Scroll down and try to find the Who Is Online existing widget, then drag it up to the top of the Blue-Outlined Forum Display Box, or you can place it where ever you want it to be placed at in your forum.

As far as i know, widgets can be placed either left or right of the forum content.

Exactly. But by posts, he probally meant forums.

Anyway, you can manually choose which side you want your widget to appear on in the Forum Index.

Yes thats what he meant forums.
He had clearly mentioned in his first post what he wanted, on top of the forums which is not possible.
