Making my homepage smaller

I was wondering how I make the homepage and other pages on my forum to be smaller? For example, I want to see my background, but the width of my forum is to wide. I searched for this topic already, I found one, but I couldn't understand it much. I was hoping someone might explain it to me. Thank you!

Go to the General tab in admin panel
under the forum section> go to Configuration
Scroll down until you see the Pages structure box
adjust the forum width
