is there a way for members to automatically enter a group once a certain number of posts is reached?

No, i don't think so

Otherwise : before i went into forums and all this, i was SURE that users get new ranks automatically, based on their posts.

You are right, they do on my site. I have made groups i.e 1 post = new member, 50 posts = junior member and so on. It works fine, as soon as a member reaches that amount of posts their status changes

admin > users and groups > rank administration > click on add new rank > sets all special users to no - fill in various other fields min posts required etc. and away you go.
