Portal/html pages

I was wondering if there is a way to make the portal your homepage. and i was wondering (my forum is for a non profit religuous orginazation) if there was a way, to put in the middle, stuff like news, and a paragraph or 2 about our mission. help? (btw, ima totl noob when it comes to website building.)

I believe when you create a portal it becomes your homepage
if you have activated it that is

all of the boxes or widgets you can arrange how you want.
and even create your own widgets ...like WELCOME or whatever you want to call it.
