Is it possible to Index Responses to Topics ?

I was wondering if there is a way to have the number displayed, on each reply to a topic.
Example If it is a new topic, that first post would have a number 1
when someone replies to that topic, their post would be number 2
the next person replying to that topic would be number 3
and so on.

Maybe there isn't a way to do this ?
I'd like to know if it is possible, or if this is something that can't be done.
