thread/post backgrounds

My apologies if this has been asked elsewhere.

Is it possible to have a transparent background for all the individual categories on my forum, but then once you enter into one of those categories, all threads and posts have a solid background behind them?

So like on the homepage for my forum, I want the category backgrounds to be transparent, so people can see the background image. But then, once they enter into a category and see the threads that are posted, there would be a black background behind them. My reason for this is because the background image I have on my forum has a lot of colors on it, and there isnt really a single font color I can choose that would be clearly visible to members reading the posts.
