Group Color Empty Group Color

I heard someone saying that you can change any member's color by selecting any group color and making it hidden.But when I tried.There is no effect to member's username.Can you tell me why or how?

You can't color members from a hidden group that is colored.

Then how do you colorize members without the group visible to members
(colors must be available to members)
