Little Advice...
When making button try to use rounded corners, make them look alot more sleek
Try a better font, the one you have used look plain and dull. But saying that you should keep the font readable and understandable.
Also, try using a couple of points lower on the font size. The Post Reply icon text is almost outside the box
And try to us Capitals only where needed

I've got no experience in GIMP what so ever.

Try using a font such as Tekton Pro or Trebuchet MS
Eliminate the black lines around the shape or decrease the thickness of it to about 1pt.
Other than that great job
Just a quick example, not the best because i just quickly knocked it up....

First of all, you never post your first buttons. Why you may ask... because no one really cares and there's nothing to actually criticize as it's just plain bad. Learning tool by tool all by yourself will take ages so check every tutorial you see... ever heard of YouTube perhaps?
