Meta Tags. Help?

Ive looked around in the forum here and the topics i can find dont help me with entering meta tags.

Whenever i try to enter anything it either turns my entire forum grey (so it looks like it has HTML disabled) or the code doesnt enable it to be searched (ive left it for about 30 mins before trying to search)

So can anybody please clear up with me how to enter the Meta Tag correctly, and give me the correct code to enable it to work.

I'm so confused.
