How do I set a loading icon for loading images?

I want to put something like this to show up during the time a picture is being loaded on to the screen. Can this be done? If so so, how can I go about it?

Images shouldn't have to load in the first place!

Indeed. I agree but in some cases, threads with many pix and users with slow computers = slowly loading images. The icon would be used as an indication that there is in fact images there waiting to be loaded in.

hmm.. i've heard that b4, and then POOF! somebody comes along with a script and it works!

You would have to fake a load, meaning put the loading image in before the real image, so basically adding in loading time that doesn't even need to be there.

If its done correctly, nothing has to be 'faked'. I wouldnt waste time adding a loading image to pretend images are loading... That would be stupid.
