Solved Guest showing as online, but I restricted access

Post by flamanar on November 4th 2010, 10:05 pm

I disabled all guest access to my forum...yet sometimes I see a guest in my 'who's online' and it says they're viewing the forum index! Not sure what to think of this. I'm sure I disabled all guest privileges, so I'm not sure why a guest would be showing as online on my forum. Any help is appreciated.

I'm no expert, but you technically can't "ban" anyone from going to your website. Unless it's on construction mode, or something similar. But yet, you still can't ban them. If you disabled all permissions for guests, the forum index is just the main page. They won't see any topics or forums. The only thing they'll see is just your design.

If you actually disabled from guests to entering your forum, how can anyone join your forums?

But my reccommendation is to make a new account and then see it yourself from the eyes of other guests. Or just log out to see your forum as a guest.

Hope it helped...

I did find out that the IP of the guest matched the IP of one of my members who was on around the same time. No idea what that means, though.

Guests aren't allowed to view anything, and new members need admin approval. No idea how a guest could be past the login screen and viewing the forum index.

Ahh I see what you mean now. You are perfectly fine then. A normal guy (like me), if I went to your forums. I will be able to see your main homepage. And maybe some navigation bars, if you have. I won't be able to see any topics, forums, posts, anything you disabled for guests to see. But while I am on the homepage (not seeing anything), you will see that I am viewing your forum index. The forum index is just the homepage, just another fancy word for it. They are "viewing" your homepage, which if you have it right, it is nothing. They only can see your webpage design, not any forums. They are not going beyond anything, or any security, they are just clicking your website.

And for the IP, it makes sense. To log in, you have to go through the homepage right? Open the website, and that's what you saw. A "guest" viewing your index, which was your member trying to log in. Each computer has an unique IP. So if it's the same IP, it is coming from the same computer.
