about change pass config

Hi! i'm just asking here about the topic.

do you know how the system generates the change pass configuration? does it use smtp?
i actually have a site that is linked to my forum in-case site is down.

"for example, a user forgets his password and uses the forgot password link so they can change it by receiving through their personal emails"
so if anyone can help me with this i gladly will appreciate it, i'd like to know the configuration about it and how it works, thanks!

What smtp? We already have this system, wherein if you lost your password on a forum, you can use the link that says 'forgot your password?' near the log in area.
