In progress Hiding forum from Goggle & other search engines.

Post by Guest on August 6th 2011, 8:04 pm

Hello

Hello - I'm new here so I do apologise if this is covered elsewhere ... I have searched to no avail.

My problem is that I wish to completely hide my whole forum from the internet search engines - such as Google - I'm still working setting it up & it's not ready to be viewed yet.... but it's showing up in google searches already

I'm not very tech. minded .... clown
so if somebody could explain the process to me I'd be so grateful - many thanks in advance
Very Happy

You can't remove them.

Thanks for your reply but I'm not sure what you mean MrMario
- I think that there is a way to stop the forum showing in Google searches as I know of another forum that has achieved this - & it's content is very similar to mine.
My forum is it's "sister" in a way - we're using it to "back-up & reorganise" whist the other keeps going - the thing is I've spoken with this other forum's owner & she can't remember how she actually managed this ...
:/

Then could someone please explain to me why my colleague's forum does not show up in a google search & mine does - yet both forums have the same content.

Hi,

Yes indeed it is possible to stop bots (And spiders) from crawling your forum Very Happy

Admin panel >> General > Search Engine > Meta tags, in the boxes, insert the below
name = robots
content = noindex

and save.

Her forum has been around for much longer than mine ( one year longer) so I don't think that this is the case but thanks for your reply

Thankyou for you advise Darren - Very Happy

Does this look correct to you because I've done this & it's still continuing to come up in Google searches - but the other forum - with the same content is not.
Many thanks in advance
Very good

It will take time for search engines to remove you from their databases. Check out this for more information.

Also remember bots can only gather information they have access to.
So if you have all your forums set for members only, then the bots can not gather any info on the forum. they will only crawl on the outside.

you can also do simple things, like not have forum name or description displayed as well as not being in any forum directories.. so you do have some options, but the best would be just to have all your forum permissions for embers only,

Not quite, you see the option "meta tags", hit the Add next to it, to create a new tag, and set it as the option of "Create new 'Meta Tag'" then add the name & Content to as I have above Smile

So, once you add that, effectively, your forum will not be indexed by Google, Yahoo, MSN, and many other bots, however, a cached (Out of date) version will remain online for a little bit, but cannot be updated, and will be removed after some time.

yeah i remember you telling me about that before.
You know whats funny.. you have so many people that want it in the search engines and cant seem to get it in there enough, then you have those that would rather not be in search engine but are more then they would like it to be.

But either way you look at it,Guess setting up those meta tags can help for whichever way you want it Smile

Right... lol only if you say so D-man Razz

This'll be more correct:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">
Also I recommend you to clear any tags in search engine settings and input "and" in your description and keywords (you can hide description in any time Smile )
But your page will be in google. However, my private forum isn't shown in search Smile
