I know it must be possible but I can't find out how to set the default group I'm making a forum for my college course so I need to have all new members as [student] and then I can set the tutors to admin/tutor when they sign up. thanks

Create a new group by going to "Admin Panel > Users & Groups > Groups - Group Administration"

Create a new group and call it what you want and in the settings for that group, set it as an open group, with auto-subscribe enabled and set the minimum posts to 0.

This means that all new members will automatically join that group when they sign up. It will also put all current members in that group as well because everyone has more than 0 posts.
