Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Is it normal for forumotion to reduce hits on threads of a forum without notice if the
number exceeds the limit.? If so, what is the limit.?

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
I am assuming you mean Number of views. I am not aware of the limit, but i can ask if there is anything like this? Also, i don't think the number of views would be reduced.
Can you give your forum URL & details about number of views being reduced?

I'm not clued up on Computer jargon but presume URl means the name .
http/missingmadeleine .forumotion.net/
Last year I posted a new thread which received over 10,000 views and one moring it was reduced to 100, The Moderators said they thought forumotion had done this because the
number of hits was exceeded. I opened a new thread about the EC crisis which over a few months had received 13,750 views. Three days ago I noted the number had been reduced
to 114 which is making me very suspicious . Would forumotion intervene and reduce the
number overnight?

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Its been my experience that when a thread reaches its limit and a new post is attempted it will show a message saying that you need to create a new topic or "split" that one. I have never split a topic I just locked that one and created a new topic part 2. I then added a link at the bottom of the locked topic to the new topic part 2.
But I would be interested to hear what Sanket finds out.

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
What I find intriguing is that it happened overnight,. with no explanation and
at the time I thought the explanation odd.....now, after a second time on my
threads, no one elses , I am thinking dark thoughts. LOL

Are you sure those threads were not split after 990 posts in a thread, which is the limit?

Morning Sanket , No, as I said, overnight the 10,000 odd thread showed 100,
and the 13,750 showed 114 .runawayhorses explains what he does but there is no evidence on these threads of forumotion saying the limit had been reached and a new thread to be opened, which I presume would be posted daytime when Staff are around. Would it be Admin or Mods who would be responsible for
implementing the change.?

No, i didn't mean that. Okay, are the number of replies on the thread the same?

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
No , the majority of the 13,750 is from views by interested Members, Guests etc who are interested but do not post. The EC thread is about the Euro crisis which is obviously so much in the News. There was a time when the threat of Greece leaving the Euro when the thread received over 100 views 0vernight!!
MM has a policy where non Members can read can read but not reply, I think
this applies to most Forums and blogs which obviously affects the number of
views. As an example, three days ago when I stopped posting , even though there is no News, the views have risen from the 114 to over 500.!!!

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Iv.e just checked it out again and think MM might have cocked it up, The curent
thread was started on 14th July and there are 8 pages with an average of
10 replies on each page. The old thread was locked a few days before this current one and I think they brought forward the number of replies onto this thread.
Can you explain the normal procedure, does proforum monitor MM and advise
when the limit on the thread is reached? Should MM lock the thread and then immediately open Part 2 on the same thread as the Member from Florida does.?
Also , what is the number allowed for replies to threads?
sorry if I appear dumb......I am LOL, at least where anything technical to do with a computer is concerned.

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
The message is not posted it shows you the message when you try to make another post. Thinking back on this if I remember correctly it splits the topic into 2 topics automatically. Its not done by anyone personally its done by the software. So night or day is irrelevant. And the amount of views is irrelevant.Beattie wrote:runawayhorses explains what he does but there is no evidence on these threads of forumotion saying the limit had been reached and a new thread to be opened, which I presume would be posted daytime when Staff are around. Look your forum topics over carefully and see if you can find a topic with the same name that was split by the software.
Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Thanks runawayhorses.....I will never understand computers and how they function.
BTW, I have American Friends in New Jersey who I have visited twice, now they
tell me they have bought a condo in Florida and invited me to stay there with
them next March....looking forward to that.!

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Right runawayhorses, I found the original EC thread whjich was started on 30th January and locked on 14th July with a link to the new thread. However the new thread was not posted directly after the locked thread which confused me but I have counted the replies on the new thread from page 1 to 8 and they total 114 which is right.
Thanks for your advice and thanks too to Sanket who will probably avoid me
in future if I have any more queries.....only kidding Sanket.
I will make a point of visiting forumotion more often just to find my way around.

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Ok maybe its not done automatically I just don't remember. It could be it started putting the message that the topic thread was full and it needed to split the topic so I clicked "OK" and then it created the new one, or I created the new one myself, something like that. Either way I took care of what needed to be done which was obvious at the time.
The real point here for this topic question was did forumotion intervene and reduce the number of posts overnight, the answer is no. However the program 'could' have split it automatically or moderator could have manually split it and locked it, and created a new one. Either way this situation was taken care of and no posts were lost.
Glad we could help.
p.s. I hope you enjoy your stay here in Florida, March is a good time of Year I'm sure you'll have fun..

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Thanks , the last time I went for thanksgiving to New Jersey, after 17 hrs travel including time difference, I said "Sorry, but I think this will be my last long haul flight , it's too tiring". My friend said "dont say that, wev'e just bought a Condo
in Florida, showed me photos, I said "well maybe I can manage one more trip"LOL
Actually it's a shorter trip too.!!!

Beattie, don't worry i won't ignore you.
The thread gets automatically split after 990posts are crossed in a thread. A new thread is created.

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Morning Sanket,
Thanks, so forumotion does this automatically? This didn't happen in the first
thread, it was locked on 14th July and I opened a new thread the same day.
Out of interest, what happens to the views? are they transferred to the new
thread ?

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Number of views are not transferred.
There is a limit to the number of posts in a thread: 990.

Re: Number of hits allowed on any one thread
Thanks again, I have to make notes of all this to report, so when you say the replies are split, if there were 1110 replies, 20 would go on the new thread.?
