As my forum is newly born there should be no problem with users registering with any name they chose. However quite a few are getting the username already exists message. Help!

Hi,
Kindly please check the following settings, it might be the one causing the problem:
Admin Panel > General > Security
Unauthorize subscriptions made with the most commonly used spam usernames. : No > Save
(This will serve as an open gateway for spam names)
Or check for inactive users:
Admin Panel > Users & Groups > Inactive users
Activate users from there and see if there are accounts not yet activated.

Yep I had the same issue. once you do the first step he mentioned it will be okay.
