Click on a forum name
Permissions tab
Change the permissions for guests.
Save
Repeat it for all forums.

Thank you I found that. Is there an option so guests can see the forums but not the posts, it seems to either not let visitors see anything other than the categories or everything? many thanks

There are two options View the forum & Read the topics. in the permissions tab. That should do what you want.
