Solved Some Members can't register or log in!

    Post by Standaman94 November 20th 2016, 4:31 pm

    Hello

For the last week or so we've been getting emails from members who say they have registered and followed the activation steps, but they can't log in. Activation settings are set to "User" and we have the CAPTCHA confirmation code also on.

For instance, today someone says they get a message saying something like "error, invalid username/password, this account is not active"

When I search both the forum Memberlist and the admin panel search, neither their username nor email give any results.

The forum is highly active with thousands of users... And it's very frustrating I can't help these new people as it looks very bad on us. Whats going on?

    Hello,

May you check to see if the user's account appear in ACP (admin panel)-->Users & groups-->Users-->Inactive Users-->New users ? If so, then you simply need to activate their accounts manually in that menu and that will resolve your issue.

Ah yes, I see now. Thanks!

How come it's doing that all of a sudden? We didn't have to manually activate previously.

If your forum has been a little inactive lately, then it is probably because of that.

Last year Forumotion implemented a new anti spam feature, if a forum is inactive (getting very few posts over a few days), the system will automatically make it so an admin has to activate every account manually until the forum is re active again. All you have to do is make a few days every couple days or like one or two everyday and the system should automatically revert back to the settings you have it set to.

Hopefully that clears this up for you?

May we consider this solved as well?

What's considered inactive? We've had 9 new posts so far today, 1300 posts so far in November... 2100 in October.

We do not know exactly what criteria the system uses for it.

That is a possibility as to what it could be.

I would double check that setting again to make sure it is indeed set to user. I know about a month ago an update accidently changed that setting to a different one on some forums, so that is a possibility as well. I would just double check to confirm that it is indeed set to user.

If it is, it is probably the anti spam system then. Did your forum have very few posts yesterday or the last couple of days? If so, that could possibly be why. All we know is that at an unknown amount of posts per day or every few days, the system will consider a forum in active and force this option until it is active again. I know the number is very low like maybe 1 or 2, maybe 3 posts in a couple days and it might consider a forum inactive. If your forum had a couple days of no posts the system might have triggered this, but now that your posting it should go back to your settings.

The third possibility is maybe the users did not click the link in their emails or just didnt check their email to activate their account and thus it sat there unactive until you manually activated it. All of these are possibilities, which reason, I cant know for sure. It is probably one of those three that caused their accounts to need manual activating by you.

What I would recommend is checking the inactive users list every so often, every few days or once or twice a week or every two weeks or something like that, just in case for some reason a user did not activate their account or didnt know how to, you can go in and activate the accounts for them. Wink

Either way, I believe you have activated the accounts now and they can get in correct? That said, may we consider this solved?

Ok I see, I'll keep an eye on it Smile From memory we did have a quiet period just over a week ago for about a day or two so maybe that triggered it.

Thanks again and I'll mark this solved.
