Solved Making a backup of a forum

Post by BloodDrunk March 17th 2017, 10:38 am

Is it possible for me to download the entire forum (in it's current state), so I can edit its design in offline mode, so I don't mess up with it while it's online?

    Hello @BloodDrunk and @Broomhilda,
If you wish to export your site theme you can follow these instructions below!

Step 1: Access your Administration Panel
Step 2: Click on the "Display" tab at the top.
Step 3: Click "Themes Management" under Skins.
Step 4: Under "Export your Skin" use the drop downs to select the current skin and "Whole Style"
Step 5: Click the Export Button.

This should immediately start a download for the entire theme style in 1 single file for you to save and import on any other forumotion website as well. You might also be able to make your changes as long as you have a way to open up that file.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,

Glad I was able to provide some assistance @Broomhilda and to answer your questions...

The export allows you to create a copy of the full theme or whatever you specify you want it to export for you to transfer over from one site to another. Example below!

    EXAMPLE:
I create a Whole Site Export on "Site A"
I go to my other forum names "Site B"
I do an IMPORT on "Site B" using the file created from the "Site A" export.

Now, "Site B" will have the same information that "Site A" has with no changes made to "Site A".

Basically it creates a copy of the whole site or whatever you choose export to be about without changing the actual site.

Also, regarding losing anything from the site, no. You will not lose any content related to your forum in an export. As I said, it is more of a "copy". Not a deletion. So doing an export WILL NOT delete anything from your original site.

    Hope this information helps!

    Cheers,

No problem! I understand having all the questions!

When you do an export it will automatically export the file to your computer / laptop downloads folder. This way you can move it to another folder if you so chose just for safe keeping Smile

And that is fine if you don't have any other forum to put it on. I have a test forum for me to mess around with and test with files and such for troubleshooting purposes!

When you add a new theme to the website, it will automatically edit the files for the most part if needed and Javascript files should stay the same but may be a bit messed up depending on the design coding.

And that theme that was made by @Ange Tuteur should work for your forum and if you have any questions I would recommend reaching out to him on it since he is the creator and knows more about it then anybody else here!

    Cheers,

    @Broomhilda,
Glad I was able to help answer your questions. In regards to making a test forum, you would just create another forumotion forum like you made your first one but just name it what you want. Such as broomhildatest with the .forumotion.com extention at the end. This way you have a test forum to make all the tests you want before moving them over to a live site.

If you have any further questions feel free to PM me so we don't use other threads! I would be more then happy to answer your questions.

    Cheers,
    James!

The export and import options is only for the theme, not content of the forum.  Content is members, topics, posts, etc.

    Broomhilda wrote:Hi Gray..

What me means by this @Broomhilda is that when you export the theme, it ONLY exports the design. All posts, topics, articles, and members will stay on that same website. This won't transfer all the actual Content of the site from one to another. This only moves the overall look.

    EXAMPLE:
Site A: 500 Members & 100 Posts (Does an Export file)
Site B: 0 Members & 0 Posts. (Does and Import of Site A)

Site B will still have 0 members and 0 posts.

    Does that answer your question?

EDIT: Sorry, @SLGray already answered! I didn't see that.

BloodDrunk is asking about the whole forum, not just the theme.

Since we do not have access to the database, we can not get a download of our forums.

What most people do is create a test forum that way they can test codes, create themes. etc.

    @broomhilda,
Forumotion forums automatically back up every so often so if something did go wrong you can use the Forumotion utilities to restore the site back to what it was on a specific date when the backup was done. This way it provides a bit more comfort in knowing that whatever gets messed up can still be recovered.

But as SLGray says it simply makes a copy. Like when you highlight some text and right click and click "copy". The original highlighted text stays there and you can then paste the text again. Then you will have 2 of the same line. The original line you copied won't be deleted or lost in any way. Think of it like that.

We are not really talking about backups.  Backups are used to restore your forums to an earlier date.

Backups are used to restore your forum to an earlier date if something happens.  Also there is different restore types.

Export & Import only deals with themes.
