Description of problem

Hello everybody,

I want to have a notification which will show "1" with red background and number in white color above the link for Personal Messages. How to accomplish that?

Do you mean you want it show in the navigation bar when you have a new pm and how many new pms you have?

If so, do you have a text based navigation bar (standard navigation bar), or an image based navigation bar (custom navigation bar)?

Yes! Exactly that.
If there are 3 new PM's from 2 different persons, then when you open one of the messages, the number will reduce by 1, until you've opened all the messages.

Also, I'll afterward re-design the navigation bar, to separate some of the links from others. Will this screw things much?
Also, I'll create a notifications link, and would like to have the same system for notifications like PM's (It will show notifications like when you've been tagged (I have the JS for that if needed), and when somebody posts on your wall, adds you as a friend and all the notifications etc...).

I need to know how do I "know" when a user has received a new message (1, or 2 or many..), and change the text of the link accordingly..

I've tried something with forumotion's toolbar and its variables, but don't know how to use 'em to my advantage. That is, alert a person when a message is received or any kind of notification
