No answers? How about ...
I'm not having much luck getting an answer to a critical question around here (specifically: https://help.forumotion.com/administration-panel-problems-f44/permissions-t20596.htm), so can anyone tell me if the self hosted version of phpBB has more options that would allow what I'm asking? The total absence of a written manual you can refer to is making this a real exercize in futility and now I'm unsure if I want to host my own phpBB forum setup.
Re: No answers? How about ...
for the self hosted version of phpbb you will have to add many modifications yourself, it doesnt come like a forumotion forum, it comes as a basic package that doesnt even have quick reply say...
i have answered your question, at the weekends it can take time for staff members to reply, depending on when they get online.

I just saw the answer you provided. Sorry to say that won't work for what I need. That issue is going to be a problem for me unless the self hosted version of phpBB will allow it.

I thought I replied to this topic ...maybe related to Firefox's crashes (the one under ubuntu has got more unstable on my PC lately, I switched to epiphany for now)
What I tried to post yesterday : On FM, it's not possible to protect by password, you need to use group permissions. If you don't want all members to access some sections, you need to create groups, then modify the forums' permissions to allow access to these groups.
If like me you aren't at ease with the current permission system, you can try the old phpBB2-like system in the old panel you can access by clicking "Old version" in the panel's homepage.

Re: No answers? How about ...
I'm using the "old" version of phpBB, as I've already mentioned:)
I have created groups in which to put people I want to have access to special private forums, but it appears others can still see those forums - if not participate. I have permissions set for those forums that restrict access to all but members of that group. I don't even want those forums to be seen by anyone not in the group - that is the problem.

You must see VIEW and READ to Groups
You can create a test account, to test the permissions by yourself.
