Chat question

Sorry I'm a complete, total newbie to this whole forum thing!
I've searched forever for help and can't find the answer. Sorry if its redundant!
I need basic help with the Chat box. I need the actual code to begin with. I've read that there is an actual chat that we can use, but I just can't find it.
One I have the code, I don't have a clue what to do with it.
Any help would be fantastic please!

goto "modules" you will see a list of portal and widgets, select "chatbox" then select yes to activate and select where you want it to show up
