Not similar because I do all those steps and a user goes into a different group because they are in three groups. I want the user to be in the legend as a default group.

Well as i answered in the other post, Create a group using the users name, then add them to it and it will show up in the legend

I have done it all but the user goes into another default group and not the one I want them to be default in.

Hmmmm Set the rank to "Special" and then navigate to the the bottom of their profile page in the admin panel

Select the special rank and save,

Does this make a difference?

Sorting hat - Yes
And the sorting hat isn't default in the sorting hat group seen in my forum: http://hogwarts.lovelyforum.net/ but the sorting hat needs to be in all 4 house groups as well. How do I make it default that the sorting hat goes into its proper group?

Edit: As soon as I wrote this post it decided to go into its default group.. Maybe there was a glitch? Confused

I did move the sorting group next to the global moderator group so maybe that was the problem?
