HTML enabled - what is it? Empty HTML enabled - what is it?

Post by wow99 January 29th 2009, 10:49 pm

What does it mean if I enable HTML (in messages)?

I have had the forum running without HTML enabled and I haven't missed it.

Will it allow members to put moving avatars in their signatures? If so, I don't want that.

What does it do for the messages?

Will it make a difference for posting images (I use photobucket at the moment which works fine).

What is the main reason why people want HTML enabled?

Probably to do things like this:

<marquee behavior="alternate" "scrolldelay="25" "scrollamount="10" style="width:50%; margin-left:25%; height:100px; line-height:13px; background:url('https://i.servimg.com/u/f66/13/36/15/13/bluegr11.jpg'); color:#f0f0f0;"><br><br><img src="http://www.phpbb.com/theme/images/logo_phpbb.png" border="0"></marquee>

I think one of the main reasons most people would want it enabled for the posts is to embed videos.
most of the time the video player link doesn't work and you have to use the embed code.

Often things that are HTML enabled are Youtube videos that have embedding, Myspace graphics and slideshows of pictures, etc. Plus if a link is not HTML (long lines of funny codes) then there is nothing you can do about it as far as I know.

On Photobucket there is actually an option there with HTML on there. There is not really a difference if you upload the pics in the HTML format, only except to make sure in your profile that you can view it.

Talking of moving avatars, they very often have a normal link to it and if you don't want them, there is nothing you can do to stop them except if you want to write it out in your rules that you do not want them in your forum. Plus on many image hosting sites there is an option of uploading the pics in the HTML format.

Plus, images can be resized using HTML, they cannot with BBCode.

HTML is a language to make for Example internet sites. In posts you can resize images, like werefree showed, you can paste video, you can add Flash animations/games, and many more things. Here, on forumotion is a trick to "kill " "Quick Reply" Box, "New Topic" and everything under Quick reply with using HTML in posts, but i wouldn't show it here Razz

I have not seen anything that has convinced me. I 'know' what HTML is. It's just that I can't see how it enhances my forum.
I resize pictures in photobucket, videos can be played, we only had one so far it's not something we use a lot and it's used using Divx. For the rest we just use links (urls) to pages which do fancy things like you tube etc.
But I think I know what you mean.

If there's someone who can explain it to me in a more comprehensive way that would be great. So I'm looking forward to more responses.

I'm afraid your replies do not explain anything to me and to be honest I find them slightly patronizing. I am not a programmer or web designer or anything.

I mean the setting 'Allow html' in General -> Forum -> messages and emails.

I have used this forum with my friends for 17 months not using HTML allowed.

I just wondered what the advantages would be if I would change to allow HTML. What can I and my friends (as users posting messages etc) do that I/we can't do at the moment? Not looking at it from the programmer point of view but from the daily user.

In other words have I missed something?

And maybe will it make things impossible that I can do now.

That's all, I thought this was a fairly simple question.

Here is your previous post with some HTML and CSS enhancements. Does this help to convince you?

Sorry but that has not been helpful Werefree and I'm not sure why you say you want to convince me.

I am trying to establish what I can do with it.

I've read Caihlem's post on how to enable HTML and in there it says it's for flash games, images and other sources.

We don't use flash, images are used by pasting an [IMG] line into the post which shows the picture, I don't know what other sources are meant here.

Unless there's a lay-person on here that can explain the advantages I'm just not going to use the HTML enabled. If it ain't broke and all that.

Is it possible for a moderator to answer this question?

I'm not a moderator. I do have it enabled. Perhaps you might answer you own question by turning it on yourself. You forum won't disappear on you - so try it . . . .

I will give you a more of a application based explanations.

1)Flash embed code provided by most of the website provides a html code. For eg: Miniclip.com which provides flash games, provide html code.
2)As its shown by werefree, with html you can customize the pictures positions etc easily than BBcode.

Other wise to just posting messages & basic pictures, BBcode is fine. You don't need to activate html if you don't feel the need to.
