What is a Bot

On my homepage, under 'who is online' it says 5 registered, 0 hidden, 1 guest = 1 bot

Bots = Google

this has just appeared this evening. what on earth does it mean?

Can you stop them coming or not. I feel like we are being invaded and my members aren't happy

You can't stop them,but you can hide them from your members by doing the following:

Administration Panel=>Display Tab=>Homepage=>Structure and Hierarchy=>Hierarchy=>Display bots in statistics of the forum=>No=>Save.

Just an update for you,

To stop bots visiting your forum you can use the meta tags section with the relevant codes

1. Navigate to:

Admin Panel\Display\Generalities

2. Scroll down to "Additional Tags" and select the green cross

3. Select "Create a "Meta" tag type" and hit 'Select'

4. For the name add:

Robots

5. For the Content add:

noindex, nofollow

6. Press 'Add'

From now on your forum will not have bots on it, your page will not be index at all and will not show up in search engines

Yes of cause you can.
but only particular places will allow u to make a bot for them, sort of a promotional thing

You can add bots by going through the procedure i describe above and then change

The name:

googlebot
slurp
yahoobot

etc

The content:

INDEX, FOLLOW

What will happen now is that all the search engines will detect that your forum is open to track and start crawling as the word is

You can check what bots you have by using the following extension to your website address

www.whatever.com/robots.txt
