Making Catogories and forums

Hello, I have a question about my forum.
I made an new forum, and wanted to make forums and categories, but I don't exactly know how it works. I made an forum, and I want other forums in it, but that don't work. What I see at my site is 1 forum, and 3 sub-forums. My question is, How can I make the sub-forums into the 'head'-forum?
So the sub-forums are hidden from the homepage.

And I also tried to make an categorie, but I can't find it back. So another question is: What is the difference between an categorie and a forum?

I already searched for answers, but couldn't find them.. So I hope you can help me with this, or maybe you can tell me a tutorial for making categories and forums.

Hello,

First, create a category.

Administration Panel=>General Tab=>Forum=>Categories and forums=>Click on the right hand side of your domain/sub-domain name ( located to the top of every category & forum ) =>Choose the kind of forum you want=>Category=>Save

Now, go back :

Administration Panel=>General Tab=>Forum=>Categories and forums=>

Find your category in your administration page, and click on the right hand side.

Now, this is creating forums to your category. To create a sub-forum, just navigate back and find yourself the forums name you created, and press to the right hand side and you'll have your sub-forums.

Now, to set your forums style to what you like, follow these steps :

Administration Panel=>Display Tab=>Homepage=>Structure and hierarchy=>Index packing=>Split categories on index=>Medium=>Save
