Usergroups & Permissions.. or just colours of members!

I want to make my members have colours for their ranks. Is there anyway to do that? I was going to make usergroups to get the ranks coloured, however some of my forums require x days plus x posts so could I make it where the usergroups themselves all disallow access to the private forums, and then just make them have permissions manually? If the usergroup they are in says disallow,but I give them permission, does my permissions override the usergroups? If that makes sense!

What I actually want is the MEMBERS to have a colour. "Member" "Good Member" "Awesome Member" are my ranks, but I want the username itself to be coloured for ranks. So I have to use a usergroup to do it. So I can have all the usergroups "disallow access" and then as they reach access(by x days since if they have a colour they already made x posts) will my going to user permissions override their group permission?
