Solved Broken BBCode

Post by Corebalt September 3rd 2011, 3:25 am

I'm not sure if this is the correct section. But I feel as this may be a html problem - or rather, a coding problem in general.

For a few days now, my forum's bbcode hasn't worked. I did my research on here of course, but the closest topic to my problem said that the problem: "Resolved itself."

However - my forum members are being inconvenienced now.

I made sure to check if my forum's bbcode is on - and it is certainly. However, any time a forum member or I click on the respective buttons (bold, italic, center, etc...), nothing happens. We would have to type the code in ourselves.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

Hi,

Have you recently added any new codes/scripts to your forum?

Yes, in the homepage message - I added a script that adds the word: "Sub-forum" before the list of sub-forums on my page.

That wouldn't affect posting would it?

My Forum (For Reference to above script)

Other than that, the only other change was to one of the default skins for Invision: a light blue.

mm, made me feel like a Sanga now, brb Razz

Unlikely, but could you remove it and test, if they work again, then the script was the issue, if they don't work, you can re-add the script and let us know Smile

Tried posting without the script - the issue remains: bbcode still doesn't work.

Do you have WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) mode set to yes as default?

What exactly isn't working with your BBCode? Is a certain code on it not working?

Yes. I even tried turning it off to check the results - nothing... Although, I wasn't expecting it to affect anything at all. As I've never messed with it before.

DarkBlade wrote:What exactly isn't working with your BBCode? Is a certain code on it not working?

If I click any of these buttons:

Broken BBCode Snippe11

They do absolutely nothing; no codes show up, text is unaffected (selected or otherwise) - bbcodes simply don't work... they've effectively turned into "placebo" buttons. =T

Edit:

Sometimes, not often, the screen would refresh when a button is clicked - as if something was applied. However, no codes show up.

Have you tried another skin, on Hitskin you can enter your forum URL for a preview without actually installing the skin, and then check the msg editor to see if the editor functions work on that skin. Smile

The forum is currently using one of Invision's basic templates (single color scheme), the light blue version. I just tried switching it to another basic template (gray) and a hitskin template... and no luck :T

It couldn't be Invision itself, right?

I barely understand this request, no offense. I think you want me to try posting from the Quick Reply box? If so - I usually do so before going into full editing mode with each idea you guys give me. Still nothing.

It could be your broswer (Chrome). Try using other browsers. On my forum, Opera will not let me delete (Delete Button) anything, but IE8 will.

Sigh. I just tried it on both Firefox and IE - same results: "nada."

I'm at a complete loss at what changed between now and a few days ago :T

Its alright, we can still diagnose the issue and get it fixed, don't worry Smile

Ill ask a staff member to pass this up in just a minute, I just want to verify it for myself.
Could you please PM me a account details, just so I can click on the buttons - I won't post. (The forum is http://sammich.forumotion.net/ as linked earlier).
Once I test and verify it doesn't work for me also, Ill pass it up for you.

Check your CSS and look for any 'suspicious' codes

I never made any changes to the forum's CSS. The only thing I've done in regards to the template itself is changing it to the (default) light blue theme. I'm sure it's CSS is working just fine.

But I'll be sure to check anyways.

No, not necessarily. Sorry to bring this topic back to life - but there has been no change on my forum. The bbcode remains busted :/

For whatever reason.

Can you open a temp board where guest can post so i can test it and see if it's doing it to me as well.

I did not see Corebalt say it was solved,
Please do not jump to conclusions on other members problems..Because sometimes staff can get confused and think a problem was solved, mark then lock the thread without the thread creator/Corebalt ever getting his problem fixed.

Solved Re: Broken BBCode

Post by kirk September 13th 2011, 3:51 am

yeah odd one.

be sure it is set like this

Admin panel>general>messages and emails>configuration>

scroll down to.

Activate extended message editor (select) yes

and

Activate the WYSIWYG (select) no and hit save ,
if it's already set like that try changing them around and see if it's any difference?

Also when did this start to happen? you can always go back and restore your forum a couple days before this started to occur in your forum utilities, However you may lose some new post.

Other then that i would try changing the skin, theme or version, but if you do this i would save any custom coding and or templates you may have added.

Unless you added some sort of corrupt coding interfering with the bbcode some how.

But try the first thing i said, and let me know how you make out with that.

Solved Re: Broken BBCode

Post by Corebalt September 13th 2011, 5:13 am

Ah. Finally found the solution.

It was corrupt coding, or rather - coding left over from the previous template thanks to the html/javascript modules. The bbcode is finally working.

Thanks Kirk for the assistance, it didn't occur to me to check for left over code.

Also, thanks Darren for the initial assist ^^
