I plan to commend members who contribute a lot to our newly-created forum by assigning colors to their names by hitting a certain number of post. Is that possible? Thanks

The only possible way, is to create ranks for them.
ACP>> users & groups >> Rank administration.
here is an example;
Remember to put
Set as special rank; no
Minimum posts: (amount)

Follow me...
Admin panel -> admin & user group tab -> group administrator ( not group rank like chivas said ) -> make a new group you want it -> set group auto subscribe on and then set minimun post as you want it.

By using this tutorial: https://help.forumotion.com/t57913-auto-subscribe-to-groups
You are able to create an auto-join group when members hit a certain amount of posts and then you can assign a colour to that group. If you're looking for ranks, please see the above tutorials.
