Authenticating user accounts from another website

Hello !

I'd like to know if it is possible to call a web service on my forum from an external site to check if a login is valid ?

i'd like to side my forum with a php app where authentication will be required and, of course, it would be so much easier to manage if i just use the same accounts as in the forum.

I've read somewhere around here that Forumotion was not keen on opening their DBs to everyone but i guess that only a read-only service like checkLoginIsValid(user, password) that returns true/false might exists since it is not really giving out totally free and "barbaric" access to their DB ?

Any idea ? Otherwise, is such a functionality may be implemented someday then ?
