Custom Portal Module for "recent posts" in one category?

Is there a way of having a module that is essentially the same as the existing recent topics module, but is tied to a specific forum? Any help would really be appreciated, as I have a large contest being run on my forum, so I want to keep people up to date on what is happening there, but also not have it compete for space with the normal goings on in the forum.

So I guess that I have to make a custom block, but I am hopeless with CCS and the like... is there anyone who could come up with a code that would work? or should I ask this in the code problems thread?

Can a Mod either move this topic to the code problems forum, or lock this one so that I can make a new topic there? I think I will try my luck there, but I don't ant to get in trouble for making more than one topic on a single issue. ^_^
