custom recent topics module

hello

i was wondering if there was a way to create my own custom module for recent topics and choose the category i want it to direct to. i already utilize the "recent topics" module included but i wanted to add an additional separate one that reads recent topics in a specific forum thread only. is this possible? i wouldn't even know where to begin with scripts for something like this.

e.g. i want to create a "Latest News" widget module that will display topics ONLY from the "Latest News" forum.

please help. i will be forever grateful.
