Important Rules of the General Discussions

Post by Caihlem November 15th 2008, 1:11 pm

What are General discussions

- A section for discussions about precise subjects related to actualities, cinema, videogames, litterature, etc. "Light" subjects have the right to mix with more serious subjects. Each people has the right to post as long as he/she respects the rules.
Each people has the right to express himself in his level.
- A section where you can ask technical questions that may interest everyone, like "how to make a website"
- A section where we introduce topics, i.e by presenting precisely what we want to talk about. Not only by "Let's talk about belgian tomatoes", but by presenting what are belgian tomatoes, even by quoting another website if you don't have any idea on how to present the belgian tomatoes.

Only-topics

Here's a brief explanation : "Only" topics are the only ones that must exist about... a precise theme. Briefly, that's where you have to post to talk about something that is related to the subject. If you create another topic, it will be closed and we will indicate the link to the only-topic.
However, to avoid proliferation of this kind of topic, only moderators can create them. More, the themes we talk about in these topics are the ones we find frequently in the General Discussions

- Movies
- Anime/Manga
- Videogames and Consoles
- Personal problems

What General Discussions ARE NOT

- An advertising space for your forums and other websites
- A space where we post trap link such as cyberfinger-style links.
- A space where we post links for lottery games or for websites to gain money, or even for paypal codes.
- A space for flood (For example, word chains games are forbidden because they don't bring any discussion and they uselessly overload the forum)
- An arena space for public flamewars. PMs are there for this
- A space for non-constructive polls such as "Do you prefer broccoli or carrots?", "Do you prefer LOTR or HP?"
- A support section for Forumotion.
- A space for requests of moderators/admins for your forums.
- A space where you ask technical-related personal questions which the answer can be found on Google or on specialized websites (ex : I have problems with my antivirus // I would like to buy a new screen, what do you recommend me?) Moderators and members are not specialized in computer stuff and they can't answer you accurately.
- A space to ask for help for video games.

Behaviors which must be avoid

- Having shocking sayings (racist, homophobic, sexist, invitations to commit genocides, etc.)
- Post to say nothing (flood)
- Double-posting. Please, edit your posts
- Upping your topic. If your topic doesn't have any response, it's maybe because everything has been said or it doesn't interest people. I precise that the general Editboard rule about daily ups is not applicated in this section.
- Correct people who do mistakes regarding the rules. It's the moderator's job to do this. Well, but you ARE NOT moderators
- To be aggressive towards co-forumers
- Having fun to destroy a topic you judge uninteresting, but that may interest other people.
- Even if it's understandable that people may have some orthograph problems, please avoid SMS language, for respect towards co-forumers.

Criticism about moderators' actions, criticism about Forumotion

After recent problems have occurred in the French version of the general discussions, I add this new paragraph. Hoping that these problems that occurred in the past will not occur again.

Criticism is a good thing, as long as it is done in a correct way. You have the right to disagree. However, we ask you to stay polite and to avoid insults towards a moderators or the moderator team or even the administrators. Moderators and administrators are members, and as members, having a lack of respect towards them is liable to a ban. It is a question of civility.
In return, moderators will listen you and, sometimes, adopt some of your propositions.

However, if your proposition is not accepted, it's useless to make it a drama. You don't possess the ultimate truth and nobody has the obligation to agree.

Sanctions

Will be closed : topics who don't follow the rules
Will be banned : members who will continue to ignore the rules even if we warned them and/or will post deliberately :
- Trap links or lottery games
- Aggressive messages against anyone
- Attempts to destroy any topic judged uninteresting by your ego
- Messages with shocking content (It is possible that you get a first warning, but if you continue... you get out)
- Who will try to create "clans" and to turn against one category of users

Thanks to Roshieru who wrote the original French version of this chart!

Please Note : Rules of the General Discussion Section may be updated, so we respectfully ask you to read and respect them in order to prevent any confusion that may arise. :)

Update on March 9th 2006
-------------------

Hello

I add a new point to say that radioblog links are not allowed anymore because of abuse (illegal use) that users may do. I have been told by the French Forumotion staff to forbid these links.

So, by now, if someone puts a radioblog links :

1st offense : Warning (in the topic and in a pm sent to the offender) + link deleted
2nd offense : Ban

Thanks for your comprehension

Update on October 15th 2009
-------------------

Hello

Due to an ever increasing number of topics, we've decided to tighten up the rules a notch, as well as do a clean up when necessary. Indeed, from 12 pages to only 2. We hope you'll appreciate the work and will participate in the threads.
As usual, we still don't accept chit-chat threads and these will be locked.
We will also be creating Only-Topics concerning all the issues about updates in general, we do not exclude eventual topics relevant to each Update (made by staff members only).

Thanks in advance for your cooperation. :)
