Want icons for each group member is in, to show in legend

I have created a list of groups that members can join if it applies to them, but i want the icons i uploaded for each group to show in the legend near their posting name, according to which they belong to.

For instance, this is a writer's site and each writer might do different kinds of writing; so if a writer is a novelist, short story writer and poet, i want the icons for each of those groups to appear below their names in the posts (legend) so other members can tell at a glance what each writer's expertise is. Is there a way to do that?

ADDENDUM: I also want the names of the groups NOT to appear, but to maintain the mouseover name when they mouse-over the icon for the group.

I've been playing with the personalized profiles feature, using this to create groups, and use the image for that. but when you mouseover the image, instead of the group name, it shows the link to the image. How do i get it to just say the group name, without having to fill that in on the form and have it show up in text next to the image (under a member name on a post)?

Also, do these personalized profiles appear when new members fill out their profile, so they can chose which group or groups they wish to join?

I need it to be able to show more than one group because my members will often belong to more than one.

if that is where you want the icons to show, then YES it would be personalized profile.
you can make as many as you want and members can choose them.

Yes i did read the FAQ's ,as well as search this site for about 3 hours. I was unable to find a solution to this. It does not address using icons in place of colored member name.

I also did try to use the personalized profile feature, but the best i could get was one icon showing and it had no mouseover ID, so it just looked like an icon and didn't address the objective of members being able to see the number of groups the person belongs to in the member post legend, nor be able to mouseover to see what each of those groups are.

And of course, i need to know if it's possible to make those GROUP choices part of the profile of each member, so they can select it, or else be able to join the group, and be assigned the icon (badge/rank/whatever).

Currently i have all the groups created (14) and I also had ranks set up for each so that i could use an image in connection with them. I'm not sure if i need to delete the ranks and somehow do this through groups, or delete the groups and go at it through ranks. Maybe i simply need some kind of code, but if so, i don't know what it would be and where it goes.

I can't imagine that this is not possible, as forums are often used for gamers, and i know they must need to signify differing skills and ranks by an icon in the legend by their name--sometimes with more than one.

Thus, i need to be able to do this in any amount up to 14.

Is this what you want a rank image of an administrator?

That site required a login, so i can't look at that--but NO. I made it clear what i am after and explained it 3 different ways. This is not about me, as administrator, this is about members, and which groups they belong to.

I want group icons rather than group text, and want the icons to appear in the legend for the poster next to the post, under poster's name as in picture above; no mater how many groups they're in, i want all their group memberships to show.

Now I've explained it a 4th way.

In the users and groups/profiles, this is a screen shot of what shows up after i try to put in the link to the graphic/icon i wish to use for ONE of the groups...

and when it didn't show up in the legend on a post under my name, i went back to the users and groups/profile page and that is what was there.

I've tried this 20 different ways and still can't get it to work, though most say (as in the tutorial) that you can do this. I've also tried the personalized profile feature, but i need each person to be able to pick and choose according to the group that applies to that member, and this will vary.

Doesn't ANYONE know what I'm talking about and how to answer this issue?
Doesn't anyone need their members to have more than one group membership, and have those show when they post?
Doesn't anyone use an image to represent each membership?
Doesn't anyone know how to keep me from banging my head on the desk?

Sorry, i can understand your frustration. Just relax and calm down, we will solve down this problem.
I guess, this is what you want.


In admin panel,

Users & Groups>Ranks> Rank Administration

Add new ranks, based on whether you want it as when member reaches a certain # of posts. Or you can just set it as a special rank.
By this way, you can't have multiple ranks.

Thanks for your efforts, but I don't think that's it either. You have only one image, as i can see--the "newsboy" image bar...i need for members to have more than one of those.
Heres what i need

NAME OF PERSON BELOW OR ABOVE PICTURE OF THE PERSON, i.e.,

and when you mouseover that tan feather, the popup will say "essays"

and below that, (or beside that, even better)

and when you mouseover that teal feather, the popup will say "Novels"

and so on, beneath that person's name, to indicate each group to which that member belongs...

I have a different color feather icon for each type of writing there is, and each member is a writer, and they write certain types of things; this is indicated by the color of the feather, and the mouseover pops up the text that says which group that is (i.e., novels, essays, academic, short stories, etc.,) and some members will be three types of writer, or 7 or 12, and some will only be one, but i want them to be able to belong to the group designation according to all the types of writing they do....

You can't have two multiple images first of all together with that mouse over feature in one single personalized profile option. If you create two fields then you can use it.

UPDATE on this other stuff--i did finally figure out most of it. (I will post a description of the whole thing when i get it all worked out--i'm sure someone will be able to use it).

I did have to use the personalized profile section--but i was using the image selection and not enriched text, which made all the difference. Now i have two issues to solve
1) the mouseover issue--I'll try your suggestion...
2) all the feathers are showing up, bu they show up in a column, rather than on rows, and that might be the undoing of this idea. Does anyone know how to get those to bunch up a little on a couple of rows? it sure makes the post box's left column LONG>.

Okay, i got the look i want--though mine has an inordinate amount of memberships--(i write in many genres)--


now the issue is that description text i would like to appear with a mouseover. Anyone know what the code is for that, and where i should put it?

I have used the personalized profiles panel to do all this, and enriched text. Maybe there's a code for that default content box? anyone know? I'll need to make the popup/description text for each icon. I tried the

codes but they didn't work. maybe they were in the wrong place or not exactly what i need?

I try did same thing before but it ended with frustration, as we know popup/description text will always show link of that picture, it cant show exact information that we want to be,

Anyway, maybe you can do this if your have an Phpbb2 version come with template editing.

Well i hope that's not the case, because if it is, it makes the feather icons moot, and i'll have to just use text. hope i don't have to...

I had used this code. When you move the cursor on it, It displays Essays and Novels as was posted in my previous post.

No i didn't work for me, Sanket...did you test it here, or in the location I wanted it? Did you put it somewhere in personalized Profile? in default content?

Since then, i have also had to combine three images in one Name box under Personalized profiles. this was the only way to get the images to be side by side, rather than spread one-per-line down the column. So, this might make it impossible to code each image with the descriptive mouseover text...it looks more and more like it will take the tech team people to actually make a change in the admin panel to allow us to just make this happen using pre-done code...i guess...?

Sanket, I tried it but it didn't work, then i realized it was because i had more than one feather on one line...i guess i'll have to figure out if i can do three codes at once in that default content box...(sometimes there are quite a few under someone's name --like mine--so will try to do that in a modified way. UPDATE: Well it looks like it won't work if there is more than one on a line...so not sure what to do now. I can't fit all the feathers on there without it trailing down the page and making the post box too long...I wanted to be able to bunch them together, 3 or 4 to a line...DRAT!

Here's what happened when i used the default content box and used the "URL text" selection in the field.

So that didn't work either. I couldn't keep the text from showing up.
And anyway it wouldn't solve the problem of having more than one image per line, which is necessary.

Maybe someone can tell me where to find the code template for the profile legend next to the post, and I can figure it out on my own.

I tired creating the selections in Personalized profile, using "an element from a list" and thought i had this worked out in at least a temporary way, until i realized there was no way to do this so that when there was a null choice, it wouldn't default to choosing something twice. I tried making a line that said "select or leave here" for those situations, but then the sentence "select or leave here" showed up in the profile legend on posts, as if it were a selection. I tried creating a blank field too, but i guess i have to have some kind of code to do that.

If there was a drop down list that allowed someone to do the ctrl select option, choosing whichever ones out of that list, this would be good. Nt exactly what i wanted, but good.

So again, I'm stumped. I'll keep trying. Maybe someone will be able to point me in the right direction to solve this.
