Database Empty Database

Post by gBev July 14th 2009, 5:46 pm

This was originally meant to be a PM to an administrator, but as it seems I can't send PMs to them, I will post it here.

Hi,
I'm currently the admin of a forum at forum.bobsgame.com, and although forumotion has been working well for us, we're going to be making the jump to a forum hosted ourselves. I'm hoping that at the time we make the jump (should still be a couple months), you will be able to give us a copy of the forum database. Users will still be posting for now, so we don't need it yet, but I'm just making sure there won't be a problem in giving it to us in the future.

Thanks for your time.

I don't see why they wouldn't give me a copy of my database... what's the reasoning behind that?

Database Empty Database

Post by 123solutions February 18th 2010, 5:01 pm

You are joking right?

I have a client who required a site rebuild. They have lots of members and posts, unfortunately your service has been outgrown by their needs and they now need a private server to run other software packages. You not even for a fee do not release the database for the forums?

Why...?

Yes of course they do.. And their policy states they reserve the right to refuse giving DB Dumbs out.. But will you do it for a fee..

I will wait for a moderator please.

Right..

Not possible. Would you like to offer some support and explain why? Database modifications, phpbb customized? I know for a fact its possible but you seem unwilling to even accept money for this.

Hello,

Access to the DataBase has been denied by the technicians themselves.
They are the ones who preform any DB modification, such as a new "mod" like say the points system, they are the ones who have to make the code from scratch up!
Because ForuMotion uses Situ-coding, which is their own type of coding (Custom phpbb, ibp2 & punbb) we cannot adds "mods" to it, thus the techs have to code it from scratch themselves.

Your ForuMotion DB is INCOMPATIBLE with ANY other host out there, because our coding is SO different to the original phpbb and the host's servers don't know how to handle it - Period.
The Technicians will not accept a "fee" or a "monetary reward" to re-code your database alone to allow you to take it else where, they will never do it.

The main reason:
Article L. 342-1 of the law of July 1, 1998 on the protection of databases

P.S. heres a link to DB info on FM

Thank you,

The answer I was looking for. Given the chance, restructuring Sql tables is not hard.. Just takes time.

Cheers,

No, Forumotion.com reserves the right to restore or not a database of a forum to a third according to the article L. 342-1 of the law of July 1, 1998 on the protection of databases:

But can't they make exceptions?

That legislation is their choice. Unfortunately they are unwilling to offer help, receive money. Or even relinquish the rights to let others work on it. Most likely, fear of Database architecture theft.

And, the law is on their side..

Forumotion offers no scope,

Airforce12, Indeed exceptions can be made, but the decision is left to the Technician's themselves, and they have clearly stated that that will never occur, so the answer to the exception is no.

Forumotion offers no scope,

This is actually not the case, and the problem is far deeper than a simply sql table reconstruction.

The problem is the SITU-coding is so different to the universal phpbb, IPB2 & PunBB coding that it would take several days, if not weeks to reconstruct it, along with the sql tables reconstruction to be added to it.

I believe we have provided more than sufficient information to answer the question.
Is there anything else related to the DB/SQL you'd like to know?
