members not receiving mail confirmation

I have acouple of members who haven't received their confirmation mail.
They tried re-registering but it said that username and mail addy had been taken.
I've looked though the members list and they aren't there, as active or inactive.
I'm at a loss as to what to do.

As you are saying they are not in the inactive list. They have definitely not been able to register.

Well check, what username they were trying. See if other members on your forum already had that username.

yes and yes, no other members are using the name. I've run a search and can't find zip.

I was able to register with the username zip on your forum.
Something to do with your email addresses, ask them what email addresses they were using to register. Then check for members currently on your forum, if they have the same addresses.

Did you check the inactive users list?
