FTP access possible? Empty FTP access possible?

Is there a possible way to gain FTP access to a forums server to gain access to the files? I have a friend who is very much into web designing and scripting, and he asked me if this was possible, because he is helping me with some scripting. And he said that things would be alot easier with FTP access, is this possible?
