Is there a code or something to where i can have a buddy list on either column 1 or 3 for quick access too whos online and for fast PMs

I too have a similar kind of question...
Can we have some kind of coding by which we can have buddy list displayed as a "widget" on portal or forum ?? i tried it, but didnot got it right...
Any help will be highly appreciated.
