I don't think it's possible to have what your asking for without having a portal.
However, why don't you want a portal? Many nice forums have one and it makes the forum more attractive (in my opinion ofcourse).

Meanwhile, I'd like to remind you that double-posting isn't authorised. If it's for adding extra information, you can simply use the edit button. If it's just to put your topic on top, like you did, a moderator may choose to lock it and not help.
