In progress www.tanoomasretreat.com problems with IE prior to version 9

Post by baldy on August 23rd 2011, 9:44 pm

Good day,

I do hope that somebody can help here, we are having problems with the display on Internet Explorer on all versions prior to IE9.

This first image is from one of our users who is using IE8, take note of the forum with the banner, "New Posts links..." and then compare this with the same page, but using IE9:

this is the screen that we get with IE9, and you can see the title of the forum, "I've Just Posted this..." above the banner:

The member who is using IE8 has deleted the forum cookies, and has even tried deleting all cookies on Internet Explorer.

Does anybody have any other ideas for us?

Hello, have you asked that member to try clearing his cache? Beyond that it could be issues with coding. Internet Explorer is a troublesome browser, and pretty much everything below 9 is broken.

Really? IE8 works fine on any forumotion site I've helped to develop. IE9 would work even better if the good folks at eToxic would remove the META tag that is putting IE9 into IE8 mode. (That is why I'm interested in this problem...there shouldn't be a difference between IE8 and IE9.)

To the OP: I tried to look at your board to see what was going on, but guests aren't allowed to view the homepage. That makes it very difficult for others to help you solve your problem.

Are you using css3? if so, that won't work on browsers below IE9.

That could indeed be the case. Or you could just suggest he/she downloads Firefox or Chrom/ium, or upgrade to IE9 as a temporary fix.

Please read what I wrote above. CSS3 features in IE9 are disabled on forumotion boards, due to the good folks at eToxic adding a META tag that tells IE9 to render pages in IE8 mode.

Asking a person to download a different browser isn't a solution, either. When you do this, most people will think you're too lazy or stubborn to make your site compatible with their browser -- and much of the time, those people are correct...

Then eToxic will have to remove that meta tag, as there is no need for it. Pretty simple.

Also, keep in mind that in order to test my code, I have to rely on other people that run IE - as I'm on a Linux computer <3

I have a question though, Dion, as you seem familiar with IE9. Wouldn't the user be able to toggle the IE8 mode?

Hello flyingfisch, I don't think that we are on css3, how do I check, or would I have had to do something to put it on in the first place?

It would help a LOT if we could see the homepage. Many of us use tools like Firebug or DOM Inspector to help solve problems, but to use these tools, we need to see the page.
