Solved We have a major spam problem

Post by scripttester123 April 15th 2009, 10:57 pm

Hello,

My forum has had a major spamming problem recently. We've had three spam attacks in the last two weeks. The first was about 200 posts, which me and my Moderators deleted one by one, the second was a much larger, 1600 post one, but one of my members found out a way (no idea how) to mass delete topics, so we were able to get rid of that one pretty fast. There was another one today, it is only 100 posts but it still concerns me. The user who mass deleted last time is not online, and I need to get rid of it quick, because my forum targets mostly children, and the spamming contains swearing. In all three cases I IP banned the spammer. I also have the flood control set to 20 seconds but somehow the spammer gets around it. I really don't know what to do to stop the spam attacks. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Oh and I also tried the forum backup feature and setting it back to yesterday but that didn't change anything?

Ok,
He will be using a proxy to get round your IP bans, try setting your flood control to 1 minute. This might be a little inconvenient but will make the spammer(s) job much harder Wink

You can do is make it so that you and or the admins have to view to registers .

Admin Panel>>User & Gorups>>User Options>>Click Admin Only allow>>Save.

also you may want to ban the email address this will help keep the prat out of your site they will only make new accounts if you let them know its getting to you so Don't show it is by making posts in your site about it just tell your staff to remove what they can and dont post that you have banned the email address they will give up in the end Very Happy

I've been having spam pretty often now, always to do with music and movies, I think it was (I've just deleted all the topics again). Stuff to do with iPods and stuff to, and always having links in the posts to other places where you can download (or purchse - haven't checked) programs. =/

Ok, this stopped for a while until just now. Someone registered about 40 users and has around 15 logged on right now. I'm not sure which ones are his and which ones are real members. He went on a posting frenzy but luckily after I IP'd a few members it stopped. For now I have taken your advice and disabled new registrations. But I can't do this forever, if it helps at all here is the website: robloxtoday.com

Thanks!

EDIT: There are only around 10 users online now. I think I may have stopped him. I hope....

. i would also suggest opening a board that you put these members/spammers in and they have no permissions at all. technically they are still a member but do not have access to any other part of the forum and are stuck on the one board with no rights what so ever.if they return with other accounts just keep putting the new accounts in there. they will get sick of it and leave.hope that helps.
i was going to mark this as solved and lock it but i will leave open a Lil longer in case you have any questions about what i have sugested.i call it the dog house.. lol
